Primitive Worlds
| The Classroom Fossil HuntŠ is a unique way
of introducing all levels of students to the interesting and fascinating
science of paleontology. It will spark their interest and allow
students to experience the excitement of finding the remains of animals
that once lived in the Atlantic Ocean millions of years ago. |
The Geologic Setting
Twenty million years ago North Carolina and most of the
eastern coast of North America was covered by the Atlantic Ocean. Conditions
were ideal for marine life to thrive. The remains of whales, fish, porpoises,
sting rays, sharks, clams, snails bryozoans, starfish, sea urchins and many
other marine animals were buried in sediments that piled up on the ocean floor.
After millions of years the east coast of North America uplifted and the once,
ocean floor became dry land. The remains of the marine animals are now preserved
as fossils, which are found in various sedimentary deposits from New Jersey to
Florida.
20 Million year old fossiliferous gravel
|

|
The material used in the fossil hunt is a screened and
washed gravel from a quarry in Aurora, North Carolina. The gravel is a
natural mixture of small pebbles and fossils.
The Fossil HuntŠ consists of a 1/4
lb. of fossiliferous gravel. The fossils found in each bag will vary in
both the amount and type of specimens.
Each order will include a fossil identification guide and a suggested
teacher guide. |
